I'm going to speak for everyone and say that the worst feature of the iPhone is its exclusivity with AT&T’s overwhelmed, under-loved network. Unless you have the guts to jailbreak (and don’t mind cruising on the vintage Edge network) you’re stuck cursing AT&T, waiting for the day the Verizon/iPhone rumors come true.

Stop reading those rumor blogs (which have been on repeat since 2007) and start setting up your Google Voice number, which will allow you to shave some precious dollars off of your AT&T bill and introduce your iPhone to some next generation features.

Google Voice is free, and lets you create a new number (of your choice) and link it to your current mobile number. Calls, texting, and voicemail are all possible, linked to both numbers. This is all done Google style; call screening, in browser texting (on your PC), voicemail transcription, and contact-assignable custom voicemail greetings make you wonder why no wireless carriers have implemented these great online features.

Now to the money saving- you can actually cancel your texting plan (saving you ~$20/month), and effectively rely on Google Voice and your data/wifi connection; just make sure to give everyone your new number. Another plus - over wifi you can easily text, even without service. By default, Google forwards texts to your old mobile number (you’d get charged for these) - but this is easily turned off, and you can access your inbox through the Google web App. While an official App Store app would be nice (Google doesn't play those games), there are no real functionality limitations and it is amazingly fast for a webapp -probably the same speed as the native iPhone SMS app before the 4.0 update. There are no push notifications, but with the ability to email texts to a separate email address, this is not a problem. There is currently no MMS support, but there are many other (more efficient) options for sharing media.

Aside from eliminating your texting plan, Voice greatly enhances your texting and voicemail. Send and receive texts with your browser (using your keyboard!) - and your phone doesn't have to leave your pocket. With the browser extension, texting becomes possible right on top of any web page. This makes it much more efficient, and much less distracting. While Apple’s visual voicemail is great, Voice takes it a step further, by transcribing and emailing voicemail right to your inbox. The transcriptions aren’t perfect, but they are easily decipherable, and are much more convenient than checking your voicemail traditionally. The audio is even embedded right into the email .

Google Voice is a pretty easy sell, saving you money on top of doing a lot more. When you create your number, make sure you think of a good word or two for your number to spell (you can search for a number by word) - that way you can tell everyone your number is 617-The-Dude (or something along those lines).

According to Google employees that the operating security concerns have lead to the demise of Windows in Google. The policy was created after Google’s Chinese operations were hacked at the begging of January.

Now new hires are given the option of Apple’s Macintosh or to lead the way open source with Linux and its multitude of flavors. Some at Google may be saddened by the news, but others were already headed towards the Mac for security concerns. Other rumors are circulating that Google will run its Chrome OS, but it may not happen soon.

Unlike other large companies, Google has let their employees choose the OS of their choice. Should companies ban Windows because of the security risks they cause? Has Windows proven to be more of a hassle than help? Will other companies begin to eliminate Windows, or are does Windows control critical services unavailable on the Mac?

Let us know, leave a comment!

The FCC's power has been limited in a court ruling Tuesday which granted ISPs, particularly Comcast, the ability to block or slow specific sites and charge video sites to deliver their content faster to users.

Julius Genachowski, head of the FCC, at a hearing last month

On Tuesday, a federal appeals court ruled to limit the power of the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) over internet traffic. What makes this extraordinary is that the decision will allow ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to block or slow specific sites and charge video sites to deliver their content faster to users.

Under the banner of “net neutrality,” the FCC was poised to require ISPs to provide equal speed coverage to all users. However, the service provider giant Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA) contested that the FCC had no jurisdiction in the matter and that ISPs should be granted the ability to increase control over the content of the internet they provide.

Comcast’s concerns for their content speeds came after increasing network congestion from users of a file sharing program called BitTorrent, which is infamous as a major source of pirated media and software.

Conservative supporters have weighed in on the ruling saying they are philosophically opposed to granting further power to the FCC who are already famous for their control of other media including radio and television. Moreover, they argued against the government’s interjection saying that ISPs should be free to set their own policies and the prices for their services.

After the decision, however, Comcast released that they have since changed the management policies that lead to restricting access to BitTorrent and originally brought this case to court. Yet, despite Comcast’s claims that they will remain “committed to the FCC’s existing and open internet principles,” this court decision leaves the possibility for abuse open with only the guarantee of an oligopolist for protection.

This is especially unsatisfying for consumers with the impending Comcast majority stake acquisition of NBC Universal, which currently owned by General Electric (NYSE: GE) and Vivendi (EuroNext: VIV). With NBC Universal, the temptation to favor NBC cable channels and discriminate against other broadcast groups would be greater and make Comcast more likely to take advantage of their position as an ISP. In practice, for example, Comcast could prioritize NBC video streaming services over competitors.

Some consumers fear that without FCC oversight, such abuses could occur indiscriminately. However, until the FCC is granted control over internet traffic, it is the opinion of this publication that the only protection the general public would have would be in the competition of the free market.

In February, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced that it would begin testing its own fiber optic system, connecting homes, schools and business, in an attempt to one day become an ISP itself. Boasting speeds of 1Gbps (Giga bites per second), Google would be poised to compete with Comcast if it could find ways to make its system affordable. Google’s entrance into the ISP market without ulterior motives would represent better assurances that ISP providers will remain honest suppliers of the world wide web.

Ironically, Google has earlier “net neutrality” to thank for its success, foremost, as the most widely used web-based internet search engine. Google stock went public in August of 2004 and closed Wednesday at $563.54.

That’s right! Google has helped search the internet, and now they’re trying their hand at pumping it into your computer!

Promising comparatively fast speeds at up to 1 GPS (Gigabit Per Second), Google has begun experimenting with their own fiber optic network, urged on by the curiosity to see what developers and users can do with ultrafast speeds.

The secret to these speeds is in the wires. By using fiber optic cables, Google claims their Internet will be up to 100 times faster than all other Internet providers. They also plan on making it an open Internet so other service providers can allow their users to use Google’s Internet.

If you are a government official or Google fanatical citizen looking to have them run fiber optic cable to your computer, you can nominate your community here.

What are your thoughts of Google becoming an ISP? Leave a comment.
