Info on the iOS 4.2 update

Apple has a reputation for releasing huge amounts of information at once, and they certainly didn’t let us down this time. Apple has just announced about a dozen new software improvements for Apple portable devices. Well, I should be more specific than that. Apple states that the iOS 4.2 is compatible with these following devices:

-iPhone 3G

-iPhone 3GS

-iPhone 4

-iPod touch second generation

-iPod touch third generation

-iPod touch fourth generation

-and of course the iPad

These updates range anywhere from tracking your device to making your personal notes in different fonts. Obviously, some are more sought after than others, and a full list and description of each update can be found online in http://www.apple.com/ios/. However, it is still great that Apple gave us these new updates for a number of reasons.

  1. Hey, it is free. Who can really complain about that?
  2. It is easy to access. All you have to do is sync your device with the computer.
  3. You can do more. Sure, it didn’t completely change the experience of owning one of these devices, but it certainly allows you to do more. Never before could I wirelessly stream off of my Apple devices onto my TV at home, or even wirelessly print off of my device. These are great improvements and should be noted as such.

Now lets be honest. These updates are amazing, and most importantly, free. So have fun downloading them and testing them out and stay tuned for more Apple news.

How to: Make an iTunes Account Without a Credit Card

Do you not have a credit card and all you want to do is buy a free app off of iTunes? Well I have a quick and easy solution for you.

The first step is to open iTunes and launch the “App Store” and remember that it has to be the “App Store” because it will not work anywhere else. Then click on a free app and a new screen should pop up that asks for your iTunes Account, all that you have to do is click on “Create New Account.”

After you make your way through all of the forms and information, you will see a page for a form of payment, select none, and proceed to finish filling out the other information needed. Then you will need to verify your email adress before you can use the account, by finding the email Apple has sent you. This is clearly a simple and easy solution if you have no credit card.

Tracking your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch

One of the key features of the mobile me software extra for iPhones, iPad’s, or iPod touches’ was the ability to remotely locate it. This extra is now free for all 4th generation versions of these devices that run ios 4.2. This means that if you lose your phone anywhere, you can always go onto your computer at home, and find where your phone is. Along with finding your phone, this service also allows you to lock it with a special password, to wipe the memory, or to display a message and play a sound. For the sake of this walkthrough, you are trying to install the tracking software onto your iPhone.

  1. First of all, check if your iPhone is running iOS 4.2, which is the latest software update possible. If you are not sure if you are running this, try to Sync your iPhone and click the button marked with “check for updates”. On another note, if this is the first time you are creating a free account, you would need an iPhone 4.
  2. For the next step, you should turn on your iPhone, and click on the Settings App, which looks like a large gear. Inside that App, choose the Mail, Contacts, Calendars bar.
  3. Inside that, select the Add Account, which will be the first option you get. Inside the Add Account menu, click on MobileMe. On a side note, MobileMe is the software that you would normally buy, and includes many more extras on top of tracking.
  4. Inside MobileMe, follow the instructions and enter your Apple ID and password. If you do not have an Apple ID, click on the Create Free Apple ID on the bottom of the screen. If you are already a MobileMe user, enter your “me.com” or “mac.com” address and password.
  5. Now you have to verify. If your MobileMe account says “not verified”, then check you email that you provided to Apple. Inside, there should be a message from apple. In that message, click verify now, and sign in. If there is no email, click on your MobileMe account and select the option to Resend the Verification Email.
  6. With that done, return to the MobileMe screen. Inside there, switch “Find My iPhone” from off to on. When a permission email appears, tap “Allow”.

Once you have done this, your iPhone is ready for action. Sign in to me.com from a computer, and you will see your phone, where it is, and a list of options. This entire process can be used for iPads and iPod Touches. This amazing software just became free, and if you have the right generation and the right software, it would be a shame to pass up the opportunity.

Sports Apps

People always ask me, what is your favorite App. The minute almost anyone gets asked this question, they immediately think about their favorite games. I was the same. I was wondering, did I like Angry Birds or Cut the Rope more, or maybe I am just a big fan of Doodle Jump. Then I remembered a sunday when my beloved Baltimore Ravens were playing in the playoffs, and I had to stay at an even without a TV or computer for the entire day. If it wasn’t for the ESPN Score Center App, I would have never made it through those few hours when I knew they were playing, much less the entire day. Therefore, I have to say the best Apps ever created are Sports apps. They are the unsung heroes, the dark horses of the app world. Now, not everyone even knows apps like these exist, much less how to find them. Well, here is an easy “walkthrough” on how to find some of these apps.

1   First go to the Apple website

2   You will see the home page up in front of you. On the left hand side, there is a search bar. Enter in “sport apps”

3   Apple will give you a list of results for “sports apps” . Click on the first result labeled “Web apps – Sports”

4    There it will display many pages of Apps that can be sorted by popularity, how recently they were uploaded or alphabetically.

The important thing about these Apps aren’t that they have amazing graphics, which they don’t, or even that they are fun to watch, which they aren’t because loading times can be terrible. The important thing is that they give you the information you want, when you want it.

HyperDock, an improvement from Apple

Apple has a new revampedHyperDock, but doesn’t it look like Windows 7? The HyperDock lets the user create more shortcuts, Window previews, Window management, make spaces, manage your playlist, and create your iCal. With HyperDock, you can create and manage your own shortcuts. With Windows previews, you can preview the tabs you have open on the internet, finder, or anything that has multiple windows open at the same time. Usually you have multiple tabs open on the internet and it is very difficult to read the letter previews. All you have to do is lay the mouse over the window and instantly your tabs open up to small previews of that page. This feature is very handy when you want to see that one tab fast and easy. You can also drag one document to the sideof your screen and it instantly cuts it in half, then you drag the other page to another side of the screen and it cuts that page in half. Instantly you can read from one page and gather information from the other. With the control of iTunes, HyperDock makes it so simple to change music. Without even opening iTunes up, it shows the song and album artwork with a pause, next and back song track. These additions make your Mac so much more faster and easier access.

The HyperDock is generally a very good thing for your Mac. It makes using a computer so much easier and faster. The only problem is that these features are almost exactly the same as Windows 7. Every feature that HyperDock has is almost the exact same thing that Windows offers with their software. It seems as if Apple has taken a page from Microsoft and has used it to their advantage. I think that Microsoft will be upset over the fact that Apple can’t make decisions for themselves. This competition between a Mac and PC has just been drawn again. This definitely is an improvement for Apple. In every way possible this shows that Apple is willing to make changes and take a page from Microsoft. Maybe Microsoft will take something from Apple next?
